Collaborative Victory for Our Kids

The North Shore School Board of Education and Teachers Union Reach Historic Agreement for Our Children and Our Community

President Carolyn Mazzu Genovesi and Vice President Herman Berliner, along with their fellow Trustees would like to acknowledge and thank the faculty for their role in reaching a historic agreement during these challenging times that will enable the school district to reinstate crucial positions and programs that were threatened under the New York State Property Tax Levy Limit.

Superintendent, Dr. Edward Melnick said, “I am very proud of our faculty. The outcome of this agreement represents the willingness of everyone within the district to work collaboratively for the best interests of our students and community.’ He added, “I would also like to commend the Board of Education for hearing the voices of our community members and responding in a way that is best for our children, parents, and the North Shore community.”

Bruce Fichtman, President of the North Shore Schools Federated Employees, stated, “A fair settlement was overwhelming approved by our membership for the benefit of our students and the community. It represents the professional values of our dedicated faculty and their desire to save the North Shore Schools under the tax levy limit law, now and in the future.”

Dr. Melnick reiterated that many of the teaching positions and academic programs that were in jeopardy when he first presented the 2012-13 Budget Proposal in January 2012 would now be restored thanks to this historic collaborative agreement.  Dr. Melnick concluded by saying, “Thanks to the Board of Education and the professional commitment of the North Shore Federated Employees, the North Shore School District is in a much better position than most other public school districts.

The continued success of the developing public-private partnership with the Viking Foundation will help to provide long-term stability and maintain the extraordinary quality of education provided by North Shore during these challenging times.
