North Shore Relay For Life Raises Over $120,000

Highest Grossing Relay For Life in Nassau County This Year to Date

The 6th Relay for Life hosted by the North Shore School district was held on Saturday, June 2nd, at the North Shore Middle School. Some may think that after five years it would be hard to keep the spirit and enthusiasm alive for such a successful Relay event...not at North Shore! On behalf of the American Cancer Society, I would like to thank all of the members of the community who helped make this such an amazing event,” said Edward Mouradian, Jr. Sr. Director Relay For Life, Metro NY Eastern Division, American Cancer Society.

With the coordination of high school senior co-chairs Darbey Liston and Lea Mokos and in conjunction with community co-chairs, Joe and Lorraine Biundo, and the rest of the dedicated Relay for Life committee, North Shoreʼs Relay for Life event raised over $120,000 - bringing the grand total of North Shore’s Relay For Life to just under $700,000 over the past 6 years! Mr. Mouradian said, “This is an amazing feat – one that we should all be incredibly proud to have accomplished. An accomplishment of this magnitude does not happen overnight or on its own. I would like to personally thank the entire RFL committee, Dr. Edward Melnick, John Hall, Ms. Julia Salat, Jerry Boertzel & John Mahoney and the entire grounds crew for helping run a logistically smooth event.

Many thanks to Andrew Fierstein and Anne DeDona who gave inspirational speeches to start the night off in such a special way. Thank you to Mac Ayres, Emma Haley, Lisa Vetrone, Bryce Larsen and Robert Gerver who performed at the event.  Additionally, heartfelt appreciation goes out to the survivors and caregivers who came and shared their stories, and proved to be an inspiration to everyone in attendance.

This event could not have happened without the dedication of the committee members. Mr. Mouradian also thanked Darbey, Lea, Joe, Lorraine & Andrew, David & Kerry Fierstein, Ronnie, Elizabeth, Lauren, John & Adrienne Koslow,
Liz Falcone, Claire Dimaio, Marc Biundo, Alicia Andrus, Diane Hlavenka & Michelle Magrino for their tireless efforts in making Relay For Life a success in North Shore. He also acknowledged the hard work of Samantha Dipaolo and MaryEllen Cuomo who were instrumental in getting the Glen Cove community involved in Relay For Life.

Congratulations to the top three teams: Live Strong, A Walk to Remember, and Kids for a Cure, as well as, the top three participants: Andrew Fierstein, Elizabeth Koslow, and Terry Glassman.

Additionally, much appreciation goes out to the following event sponsors:
Allied Pediatrics, The Summer Hope Foundation & Rallye Motors as well
as every business in the North Shore community who sponsored the North Shore Relay For Life.

As usual, staff from the American Cancer Society stopped by throughout the evening to monitor the event. The ACS leadership commented on “Why can’t every Relay look and feel like this?” That is a huge testament to the passion and atmosphere surrounding the North Shore Relay For Life event and its participants.

Mr. Mouradian concluded by saying, “You might have been one person in one town at one Relay event, walking one lap around the track or lighting one luminaria, but you made all difference. I thank you for your support, not only on the night of the event but for the months leading up to the event as well. Looking ahead to a world with less cancer and more birthdays...”
