Featured Projects

Bond Projects:

Shortly after the vote to move forward with the Bond, the Construction Steering Committee met to look at the logistics of scheduling the projects. Many factors led to the projects being broken up into three phases. These factors include availability of funding, State Education Department approval procedures and back log and the impact on summer school in the buildings.

Due to the short design time and SED submission period for Phase One projects, the committee focused on projects that could be expedited with a minimal amount of required design time and/or engineering. These projects include the following.

Glen Head School:
Roof & Parapet Replacement & VAT Tile Replacement

Glenwood Landing School:
Playground surface repaving, Playground Retaining wall and VAT Tile Replacement.

Sea Cliff School:
Playground Retaining wall

Middle School:
Playground repaved & Roof Replacement

Since all of the projects listed above were in danger of not being approved in time for summer construction, due to a back log at the State Education Department, Dr. Melnick wrote a letter to SED requesting for a level one review of all these aforementioned projects. Please note SED recently revised their review process to allow projects that didn’t require altering the buildings and were replacing existing systems, to be approved quicker. These are considered level one projects. Approval was granted on Monday May 5th 2014.  All projects listed were bid out, awarded, and are now under construction.

District Wide Security:

DW Security projects in all of the buildings are also part of the Phase One package. The security project required a slightly longer design period than the other projects. These projects were submitted to SED a short time after the other projects. To see these projects, please click on this link (Bond Security Projects pdf).

We received approval on June 11, 2014 to proceed with the Bond Security projects.  We expect the work to begin in late July.   Due to the scope of the project and the later start date, the project will not be completed by the start of the 2014-2015 school year. We will work with the contractor to complete work after the school year begins.

Details and specifics about the bond projects can be found in the Bond information on the District website in the Board of Education section under Budget and Bond Information.

Budget Work:

We eagerly awaited the results of the Budget vote on Tuesday May 20th 2014. We are grateful to the residents for passing the budget.  There are several large projects in the budget, they are as follows:

High School:

  • Renovation of existing baseball field. This will be completed in summer or early fall 2014.
  • Renovation of existing softball field. This will be completed in summer or early fall 2014.
  • Library Air Conditioning units replaced. This will be completed in summer or early fall 2014.

Middle School:  Renovation of Existing Baseball Field – Due to field use requirements, the funding for this will be carried over to summer 2015 and the project will be completed then. This is due to the loss of the HS baseball field due to construction summer 2014.

Sea Cliff School:
Emergency reconstruction of the Auditorium Pediment façade, due to material adhesion issues.

The North Shore Buildings and Grounds Department will work closely with BBS Architects and Savin Engineering Construction Managers.  We will meet weekly with all of the contractors to keep the projects moving forward and have them completed on time.  The Construction Steering Committee will meet monthly or more as needed to keep the Board of Education up to date on our progress.
The Buildings and Grounds staff will also work diligently towards completing all of the projects outlined in the 2014-2015 budget. It is our goal to utilize the summer months to complete as much work as possible.  This will be in conjunction with the normal summer cleaning of all of the building to ready them for the next school year.
