BOE Adopts Goals for 2006-07
At a recent meeting of the North Shore Board of Education, Trustees adopted four goals for North Shore that are founded on the district’s core beliefs and mission statement. These goals will also serve to advance the long-range initiatives and objectives set out by North Shore’s 10-year plan:

Goal #1
All North Shore students deserve an education that inspires, motivates and challenges them to strive for the highest level of scholarship and the deepest level of inquiry. The Board and Administration will collaboratively examine the perceptions, attitudes, policies and practices that both support and detract from this goal, to ensure that all students receive the education they deserve, regardless of their academic capabilities or levels of study. The policies and topics to be examined include Tracking, Self-Selection, Weighting of Averages and Ranking of Students.

Goal #2:
The goal of every public school school district is similar - to educate the school-age residents living within the community. However, a North Shore education is unique. The Board and Administration will identify those distinctive characteristics that make the North Shore District a special place, and work to consistently communicate this message to all constituents including students, parents, faculty, college admissions officers, residents and prospective employees through a formally planned and executed public relations plan.

Goal #3:
We believe that ongoing, honest collaboration becomes the vehicle by which we build true learning communities…in each encounter, each classroom, each building and the district. To this end, we will attempt to increase collegial collaboration to support growth and improvement in the areas of Recruitment, Hiring, Supervision and Evaluation.

Goal #4:
North Shore School District is committed to providing a school environment that enhances learning and the development of life-long wellness practices that promotes and protects children's health, well being and their ability to learn. To this end, we are commencing an evaluation of our food services, health and physical education programs to culminate in a Tri-State review during the 2007-08 school year.  The focus will be on each program as well as the integration of these programs across the curriculum.

This set of goals is an extension of the North Shore School District’s mission statement aimed to nurture and enrich students’ natural delight in learning and in the powers of mind and body. Dr. Ed Melnick said, “I am confident that every ounce of energy at North Shore will be focused on supporting these goals and our vision in helping our students develop habits of mind and skills of critical thinking that will be crucial in leading us into the future…not just some or most of our students but all of our students."
